Ranaulf, the Earl of Chester at the time, began to work on Beeston around 1220. It has a deep rock cut ditch and outer gate houses making it a 45 piece of Royal land as it fell into the future hands of Edward the First thus making Cheshire a significant place within England. The importance of this castle was that the English military expeditions against the Welsh was strategically a good place to be. In the Middle Ages the principle work took place and three towers were raised. It is a monumental and historic site and is open to the public as a tourist attraction and certainly a great family day out.
